A road paved via funding from the MGNREGA was inaugurated at Unity village, Chümoukedima on September 5.
inister for Rural Development and SIRD, Metsübo Jamir inaugurated the cement concrete road at a programme today.
The paved road, which serves as the main thoroughfare of the village, runs 850 metres in length. According to the Unity Village Development Board (VDB) Secretary, Athonlo Thyug, the project took about a month to complete and cost approximately Rs 25 lakh. It also received support in the form of freewill donation from the public.
Established in 1984 and officially recognized as a full-fledged village in 2014, Thyug said that Unity is an aspiring model village for which he sought the support of the state government.
Minister Jamir, in his address, likened the village to a mini Nagaland where all the 16 Naga communities reside in harmony. “There won’t be many other such mixed-community village flourishing in such harmony,” he said.
Part of the newly created Chümoukedima district, he said that the district with two universities and several colleges and reputed schools, is unlike any other in Nagaland. According to him, the citizens have only to gain.
Villages are normally associated with farming but he noted that many villages in Chümoukedima and Dimapur has the disadvantage of not having farmland and thus unable to retain resources. Nevertheless, he said that Unity village can overcome that disadvantage by “Customising the society here so that we become a value-addition village and be an exemplar for other places.”
On that note, he assured of further governmental support in the form of funding for establishing Self Help Groups, road maintenance, waste management and sanitation and water related activities.
