Dimapur, August 22 (MExN): The Rising People’s Party (RPP) on Sunday came out in strong opposition against a circular issued by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Mon a day earlier on August 21 and demanded withdrawal of the same.
It may be mentioned that the DC had cautioned the village heads in Mon district against taking law into their own hands and the order had also warned that all developmental works, assistance (both CSS and State Schemes) would be stopped indefinitely, if any individuals or groups create problem by taking law in their hands which is detrimental to peace and tranquility in the society.
Further, the Village Councils and Village Development Boards of erring villages will stand dissolved immediately, the DC’s circular had stated.
Terming the circular as ‘unprecedented’, the RPP noted that the DC of Mon district has “proven himself to be an autocrat lacking in administrative expertise and wisdom.”
“Instead of resolving the issue between the two villages Yansa and Yannu with deftness and professionalism, the DC (Mon) has chosen to handle the matter in a despotic and manner. He has aggravated the issue further by blowing it out of proportion,” the RPP added.
Demanding a clarification from the State Chief Secretary on the open ‘threat’ issued to the villages regarding stoppage of all developmental activities, the RPP sought a clarification from the CS as to under which section of the relevant law the Mon DC is allowed to make the ‘threat’.
“This threat is not only unwarranted and inhuman but is an attack on the autonomy of the Naga village institution itself. This unprecedented order is akin to village ‘grouping’ of the 1950’s and 60’s, an awful experience the scars of which refuse to be healed even today,” the RPP said.
The DC Mon will have to withdraw his order, it asserted.
It further advised the DC to resolve the issue without resorting to threats and blackmail, instead of trying to impose ‘delegated or imaginary powers’, adding that it would “not only earn him the goodwill of the grassroots but will also ensure that the state government is not bogged down in village issues.”
