A rumoured move to lifting the contentious liquor prohibition law, in the upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly, made the round on various social media groups on July 21. It lifted spirit in some, but if a sitting legislator was to be believed, it is unlikely the government would make such a move, anytime soon.
“If it is lifted, it is well and good. But I am bit a pessimistic,” commented MLA and Advisor for Information and Public Relations, Imkong L Imchen, on the prospect of the government making a move to review or repeal the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act.
He said that he was not aware of the rumour or of any government plan, at present, either for reviewing or lifting the said Act. “Let us hope it is true but authentic information I don’t have,” he added.
But, per his personal opinion, he said that lifting the Act would be a “rational and realistic” option than continuing with a farcical Act of law.
According to him, a majority of the legislators have been of the opinion that the Prohibition law is no more essential, one which is causing more damage than good. “Coming to the question (repeal or not), of course, majority of the MLAs, over successive terms, have expressed that it should be lifted. But the government, as a whole, should bring it about,” he said.
