KOHIMA, MARCH 23 (MExN): The first Sociological Association of North Eastern India (SANEI) Conference concluded on March 22 at Japfu Christian College, with Prof. M. Amarjeet Singh presiding over the valedictory function.
Prof. Maitrayee Chaudhuri, president of the Indian Sociological Society, delivered the keynote address, highlighting issues of identity and migration. Drawing from her own experience of being born and raised in Shillong despite her parents being from outside the Northeast, she discussed the complexities of the "insider" and "outsider" perspectives.
"Northeast India has emerged as a knowledge hub," Chaudhuri said, emphasizing that research from the region is at the forefront of innovation. She urged scholars to explore insights from the region’s material culture, literature, and poetry and called for a published volume based on the conference discussions.
The conference featured 64 research papers, including a panel discussion and four special lectures, covering topics such as ethnic identity, governance, indigenous knowledge, gender issues, trafficking, climate change, and sustainable development. Around 200 participants from universities and colleges across Northeast India attended the event.
Prof. Ajailiu Niumai delivered the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of the conference.
