Sankalp-HEW campaign in Kohima focuses on women centric legislations

An awareness session on women centric legislations with Ferrando Domestic Worker’s Organization was held at D’ Block, Kohima on September 3.

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 4 (MExN): As part of the 100 day special awareness campaign under Sankalp- HEW, Kohima District Administration in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima held an awareness session on Women Centric Legislations with Ferrando Domestic Worker’s Organization at D’Block Kohima on September 3.

Addressing the session, Thejasenuo Vitsu, Advocate, T & A Law Chambers, Kohima stated that there were many articles in the Indian Constitution that deal with the protection and promotion of women. Citing the importance of the safety and security of women within the home, she gave a brief explanation of the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She highlighted that domestic violence includes physical and mental abuse and that the lack of financial independence of women often makes them more vulnerable victims. She also stated the different reliefs and punishments under the Act. 

In regard to the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, Thejasenuo stated that the Act was implemented to prevent and protect women from sexual harassment at the workplace and thereby ensure a safe working environment for women. She also stated the various remedies which were available to women under the Act.

She also explained at length the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and how this law prohibits and punishes prostitution and trafficking of women and girls.

In addition to these Acts, Thejasenuo also gave a brief introduction of some other acts which promotes the rights of women and children like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.

She also cited various schemes which women can avail like- One Stop Centre, Women Helpline 181, Swadhar Greh, Ujjwala, Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana and others.

The program was chaired by Kesoneinuo, Gender Specialist, DHEW, Kohima and the vote of thanks was given by Sr. Rincy Kamei, In-charge, Ferrando Domestic Worker’s Office, Kohima.
