Faculty and students of Sao Chang College during the International Mother Language Day programme held at the college Conference Hall on February 21.
Tuensang, February 23 (MExN): The Department of English, Sao Chang College, celebrated International Mother Language Day on February 21, at the college conference hall. Around 85 students along with faculty members of the English Department attended the programme.
Students of English Honours participated in the brief commemorative event, which was chaired by Takumpuba Lomou, Assistant Professor, Department of English. Akyuba Sangtam, Head of Department (English), welcomed the gathering and delivered the keynote address.
Marking the occasion, students from the 6th, 4th and 2nd semesters presented group songs in their native dialects, highlighting the significance of Mother Language Day and celebrating linguistic diversity.
Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, Associate Professor, Department of English, delivered a brief talk on the importance of the day. Addressing the students, he spoke about how a person’s mother language is the first language learned and forms the strongest connection to home, identity and culture.
Emphasising the purpose of celebrating International Mother Language Day, he noted that the observance promotes awareness of language and cultural diversity worldwide.
Dr Singh further stressed that young people are not merely inheritors of languages but active defenders and innovators shaping their future, adding that protecting mother tongues ensures that cultural diversity continues to thrive.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Rite-ü T Meru, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Sao Chang College.
