UNGMA, AUGUST 24 (MExN): A Satellite Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) was launched at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Ungma on August 24. The launch event was organized by the District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU), Mokokchung, and sponsored by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS).
Makshi Jamir, the District Program Officer (DPO) of DAPCU, provided an overview of OST, which stands for Opioid Substitution Therapy. He explained that OST is a treatment designed to help individuals make safer choices and reduce the risks associated with illegal drug use. With OST, prescribed medications are legally sanctioned, thereby reducing the risk of consuming drugs mixed with unknown substances. OST can also help individuals avoid criminal prosecution related to illegal drug use and assist them in making better decisions regarding work, relationships, and other life matters. Importantly, undergoing OST means that individuals do not have to endure complete withdrawal. OST is a crucial component of the HIV prevention strategy under the National AIDS Control Programme, particularly for Injected Drug Users (IDUs).
Imtidongba Jamir, a Tatar from the Village Council of Ungma, expressed gratitude to NSACS and DAPCU for this noble initiative and urged the doctors and staff at PHC Ungma to serve the IDU community diligently. T. Wati Longkumer, Pastor of Ungma Baptist Arogo, led a dedicatory prayer for the OST satellite, and Dr. Moamongla, an Ayush Medical Officer, gave the vote of thanks. The launch program was followed by the induction of OST clients at the PHC, Ungma.
The event was attended by various stakeholders, including members of the Village Council of Ungma, Ungma Baptist Church, DAPCU, the Targeted Intervention team, the Mobile Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre (ICTC), and the Care & Support Society, Mokokchung.
