Savi steps down as NCD Prez to contest election

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 28 (MExN): Savi Liegise bid adieu as President of the Naga Council, Dimapur (NCD) and will now hit the election trail as an intending candidate. Speaking to mediapersons following a send-off programme at the NCD office on January 28, Liegise said that he will contest as an independent candidate from 2 Dimapur II Assembly Constituency (AC). 

“I had applied for the NPF ticket but I’m certain it won’t come my way,” explained 52 year-old Liegise of his decision. He had unsuccessfully contested as an NPF candidate from 2 Dimapur II AC in 2008. Former DMC member and NPF secretary (Central), Lipok Pongen is also in the race for the NPF ticket. As a former NPF candidate, he explained that he did not opt for any other party. Asked of his campaign agenda, he said that roads, lights, sanitation and power will be his main concern. 

Earlier speaking at the farewell programme, Liegise took the opportunity to thank his fellow councillors and the citizens of Dimapur for their support and cooperation during his tenure as NCD president. “I may be taking a different platform but wherever I go, I’ll always need your support, he said, while adding that what the NCD has achieved was the result of collective effort.

He had first joined the NCD as a councillor in 2002 serving till 2004. He took over as the President in 2005, stepping down in 2008 on account of his candidature in the elections that year. He returned as President serving till 2012.  The NCD will now be headed by Vice President, T. Bangerloba Ao as interim President.
