Schools sensitized on disaster preparedness

The fire & emergency services and civil defence & home guards today gave a practical demonstration on fire safety in school and survival skills and first aid, search and rescue operations respectively on the third day of the Training of Trainers under National School Safety Programme for Kohima district.

The programme is being held under the aegis of Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in collaboration with district administration and District Education Office, Kohima at the Multi Purpose Hall of GHSS, Kohima.

In the first session of the day, ASI Dziizevil Savi from fire & emergency services explained the different types of fire, its causes and impacts. He was accompanied by ASI Thepfiikranyii Kar alongwith two firemen. A practical demonstration was given where trainees were given hand-on experiences on how to use fire extinguishers.

District Education Officer, Deputy District Education officer and principal of Government Higher Secondary School Kohima also tried their hands on the use of extinguishers.

In the second session, District commandant of civil defence & home guards Dally Jamir gave a power point presentation of first-aid, search and rescue operation. SI Matsung along with his jawans demonstrated on the same.

Earlier, Thejangulie Zao, District Project Officer, NSDMA welcomed and introduced the resources persons.Mentionably, the school safety programme suggest a series of ongoing activity that includes identifying the hazards in the school and around the campus area, conducting drills, preparation of a plan by involving parents, teachers and students. The programme strives to build on the capacities of the institutions and the individuals to meet the challenges during the unforeseen event.

The objective of the school safety programme is to sensitize children and school community on issues of disaster preparedness and safety measures and to motivate key stakeholders through direct participation in activities that would foster towards a disaster resilient community.
