The Nagaland Cabinet today decided to intervene in the Intangki issue and protect the Park with whatever security forces that would be necessary or available. In a marathon meeting held at the Chief Minister’s official residence, the Cabinet is reported to have taken into account the large scale encroachment that was taking place in the Forest Reserve and decided on its protection but the details and the strategy of the protection was not discussed, informed sources said. Minister of Industry and Commerce, Khekiho Zhimomi later informed The Morung Express that the finer details of the security measures would be worked out together with the Officers-in-Charge.
It may be noted that Intangki National Park had gone out of the hand of the Forest department with about sixty percent of the forest area destroyed by illegal logging and also by heavy encroachment to the extent of even illegal settlement mushrooming inside the park. Meanwhile the All Zeliangrong Students’ Union, after a long agitation, has decided to stage a dharna in the state capital on March 16 from 8 am to 4 pm at what it termed as the inaction of the State Government on the Intangki encroachment.
During the meeting, the Cabinet also approved the Governor’s speech for the coming Budget Session and also decided to sign the MOU with the Government of India for the proposed Sainik School, which is ready to begin classes in April this year. The meeting also discussed the coming visit of the President to the state capital.
