SEEK members reach Pangti to raise awareness on threatened species

Dimapur, July 19 (MExN): Four members of Environment Conservation Group are on a mission to spread awareness on saving threatened species through their project SEEK, an acronym for Save Endangered Endemic and Key species.

The team was at Pangti village in Wokha district to meet the team behind the conservation of Amur falcons, informed a press release. The team met Bano Haralu and her team from the Nagaland Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Trust and had a “fruitful” discussion on the subject. The Amur falcon conservation concept SEEK felt can be replicated in other parts of the world to protect wildlife and their natural habitats. SEEK added that the support of the government and local village authority and community has been significant.  

According to the release, the wildlife enthusiasts from Environment Conservation Group, an NGO based in Coimbatore, are making their way across the country traveling more than 25,000 km across 29 states and three neighbouring countries spreading a powerful message on the plight of the threatened species of Indian sub continent under their project SEEK. Two members of the 4-member team are from Guwahati, Assam.  

The team members of SEEK are Anirudha Mahagaonkar, a research scholar from IIT Guwahati doing his research on Himalayan glaciers, Srinivasan Goplakrishnan, an MBA graduate and wildlife enthusiast working in Bangalore, Abishek Ravi, an engineering graduate with a passion for wildlife and photography, Sisir Kalita doing his masters in Tourism Management at Gauhati University, Guwahati with a special interest in culinary culture, and Rupam Bhaduri, a post graduate in Energy Science from IIT Guwahati.  

The team is headed by Mohammed Saleem, President of Environment Conservation Group. He has been working with young people for more than a decade and is named as one of the magnificent tiger defenders of India by Sanctuary Asia magazine.  

SEEK is sponsored by WULF Pro and WWF India and supported by SACON, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change and CASFOS Central Academy for State Forest Officer, Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change.  

The team will meet with college and school students and share their thoughts on wildlife conservation and stress on the need for the younger generation to be engaged in wildlife conservation. The objective is also to document the endangered species and learn about the issues and threats that face wildlife.
