Seminar on ‘Human Rights and Gender Injustice in India’

Dimapur, September 20 (MExN): A one day state level seminar on ‘Human Rights and Gender Injustice in India’ was organised by the Seminar Committee, Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC) on September 16 in the Auditorium Hall of the College.  

The resource persons included Dr. Ananya Bhatacharjee, Assistant Professor, Department of English, MSSD University, Nagaon, Assam, Pranati Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Sakus Mission College; P.B Paul, Senior Advocate, Guwahati High Court; and A.B.Bhattacharjee, Senior Advocate, District Court, Sankar Dev Nagar, Hojai, Assam.  

The resource persons discussed at length on the conceptual, theoretical and empirical understanding of human rights and gender injustice in the context of India in general and Nagaland in particular. The constitutional and legal provisions of human rights and gender justice and explained how the laws in India become inoperative due to customary laws, traditional and cultural practices were discussed.  

The seminar highlighted how women are socially, economically and politically discriminated right from their birth to death. The seminar also highlighted the role of various international organisations and institutions for protection of human rights. It also outlined the role of the various institutional and legal mechanisms available, the role of Non-Governmental Organisations and the mass media for protection of women’s rights in India in general and Nagaland in particular.  

“Legislative measures alone cannot reverse the current epidemic of violence and gender injustice. By maintaining gender-sensitive environments at home and in everyday life, we can contribute significantly to a more gender-just society,” the seminar discussed.  

A press release received here stated that the seminar was inaugurated by Swami Chinmoyanandaji Maharaj, Joint Secretary, PWC by lighting of the Holy Lamp. This was followed by a welcome address from Uma Bhowmick, Principal, PWC. It concluded with a vote of thanks from Majakhon Kamei, Head, Department of Sociology, PWC.
