Seminar marks 8th Poshan Pakhwada in Zunheboto

A seminar marking the 8th Poshan Pakhwada was organised by the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Project, Zunheboto, under the Social Welfare Department at the Town Hall, Zunheboto on April 13. 

The resource person, Dr Tokaito N Aye, Medical Office (MO) of PHC Kilomi highlighted the importance of proper diet and care, particularly for pregnant women. He emphasised the need for adequate antenatal care and healthy weight gain during pregnancy. He also raised awareness on the harmful effects of junk and packaged foods, encouraging healthier dietary practices among the community.

Dr Aye emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. He encouraged the consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits for better health and overall well-being. He further stated that we should avoid unhealthy food habits and instead focus on nutritious food, including drinking warm water in the morning, afternoon, and evening, along with regular intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.

He highlighted that a lack of calcium in the body can lead to health issues and cautioned against the consumption of junk food, which contains high levels of sugar and saturated fats. He also advised that cooking oil should not be reused, as it can become harmful and increase saturated fat content.

Speaking on weight gain, he noted that developing the habit of eating junk food regularly is not a healthy solution. He further explained that foods high in sugar and fat such as cookies, fried items, packaged juices, and alcohol lack essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and protein.

He concluded by stressing the importance of essential nutrients, particularly Vitamin D and calcium, for maintaining strong bones and overall health.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Ovika H Shikhu, Supervisor, while the invocation by Zhesheli N, Anganwadi Worker and welcome address by Mughalu Awomi, District Coordinator. K Kahoshe Awomi, Supervisor, spoke on the importance of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding, while also sharing community-level experiences related to nutrition and childcare practices. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Kumusukali Z Wotsa, Block Coordinator.
