Seminar on ‘indigenous knowledge on conservation of biodiversity held

Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): Eco Club of Unity College Dimapur collaborated with CICEs (Center for Indigenous Culture and Environmental Studies) Dimapur to celebrate the National Wildlife Week 2023 by organising a seminar on the topic ‘indigenous knowledge on conservation of biodiversity’ on October 7 in the college campus.

The programme was held to create awareness among the students about our rich indigenous knowledge system and the way it promotes biodiversity conservation, a press release received here stated.

Dr Martemjen, Founder Member of CICEs as the resource person deliberated an intensive introduction on Nagas as part of the world’s indigenous community. He cited about our diverse culture and tradition as a community and how it has always associated with our biodiversity and cultural values.

He narrated Naga indigenous stories associated with the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Hornbill, Bugun liochichla and others which have significantly contributed to biodiversity conservation in the form of species conservation in the past. He highlighted on the growing trend of monoculture practices in the state, which is becoming a big concern from a cultural and biodiversity conservation perspective, the release stated.

Further, Dr Martemjen stressed on the urgent need to coalesce Indigenous knowledge and practices with Western Science and the need to explore potential ways to act together, because neither western science nor indigenous knowledge alone will be able to provide every solution with regard to climate change and biodiversity conservation.
