Dimapur, January 12 (MExN): The Dimapur police informed that 6 persons were arrested in over the past 3 weeks for extortion and theft related offences.
A press release issued by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police/PRO Dimapur said that in the most recent incident, one Atoka Awomi (22 years), said to be an “RSI” in the NSCN-IM, was arrested at Sangtamtilla on January 10 for allegedly extorting money from truck drivers. The release added that cash amounting to Rs. 8,100 was also confiscated from the accused.
On January 9, two persons were arrested at the Burma Camp bazaar for extortion and armed robbery. The duo, identified as Asheto Chophy and Akheto Yeptho, admitted to involving in “multiple extortion and armed robbery along Burma Camp to 2 ½ Mile Highway.” One .22 pistol alongwith magazine and 3 rounds were confiscated from the duo.
The release added that earlier on December 16, 2018, one Herato Zhimo was arrested at the Rail Bazaar while he was allegedly collecting “illegal tax” from vegetable vendors. According to the release, all the arrests were made by the Anti Extortion Team of the Dimapur police.
Three others were arrested in three different theft cases in the month of December 2018. Two were motor vehicle theft and the other theft at the railway platform. The release said that one Shikato Awomi was arrested from Burma Camp on December 18 while trying to steal a scooty.
Another identified as Horthing Kapai was arrested on December 27 for allegedly snatching a Scorpio (white color) from Purana Bazaar. The release did not specify the date of theft but only stated that the vehicle was recovered from the possession of Kapai at Wungram colony on December 27.
In connection to the theft at the Dimapur railway station platform on December 29, one person identified as Babu Ali (20 years) was apprehended.
