Several major civil society organisations and student bodies in Manipur have announced today to boycott the Republic Day celebration in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Amid the stand taken by the organisations to boycott the Republic Day, security measures have been tightened in and around the state capital Imphal and the district headquarters.

Briefing the media this evening, Karam Sunil, president of the United Committee, Manipur (UCM) alleged that the ploy of the Central government through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is to annihilate the indigenous people. He also said that the decision to boycott the Republic Day is one small move to “protect” the indigenous people of the State.

Ph Deban, president of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Jeetendra Ningombam, president of the Committee of Civil Society of Kangleipak (CCSK) and L Ratan of HERICOUN also expressed similar views during the joint press conference.

Earlier, several student organisations including All Manipur Student Union (AMSU) also announced to boycott the Republic Day.

Meanwhile, it is likely that protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill may get intensified after the Republic Day in the valley. There is no respite of protests even as the Biren Singh government is making all out efforts to allay the fears of the people.
