Tuensang, August 28 (MExN): The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Tuensang on Friday inaugurated its new SEWA Shakti Kendra (SSK) at House No. 23, Bazaar-C, under the theme “A Space for Women, A Centre for Empowerment and Collective Action”.
The SSK will serve as a dedicated platform for informal women workers to gather, access information and essential services, develop leadership skills and collectively raise issues concerning their livelihoods and rights, SEWA said.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, SEWA Nagaland State Project Coordinator Temjenlemla said the SSK was not merely an office but a space where women could come together, voice their concerns, access information and services and collectively work towards addressing challenges affecting their lives and livelihoods.
She stressed the importance of providing women with a dedicated space where they could freely discuss their concerns and work collectively towards improving their socio-economic conditions.
The programme was chaired by Tiamenla, SEC member, while District Convenor Anung delivered the welcome address. Temjenlemla gave an introduction to the SSK and K Achung, APW, Tuensang Town Baptist Lashong, offered the dedication prayer.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by District Secretary Starr and benediction by District Treasurer Shithsangla.
SEWA Nagaland is a membership-based organisation working with women workers in the informal sector, including street vendors, farmers and home-based workers.
Since its inception in 2013 with the mobilisation of workers in Dimapur, SEWA Nagaland has grown to more than 3,000 members across seven districts — Kohima, Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Tuensang, Shamator, Phek and Meluri.
The Tuensang SSK is the fifth operational SSK of SEWA Nagaland, joining centres in Dimapur, Kohima, Pfutsero and Shamator.
