DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 27 (MExN): Shalom Rehabilitation Centre, a project of the Development Association of Nagaland (DAN), run by the Catholic Diocese of Kohima, conducted an awareness programme for 97 B. Ed Yr 2 students at Bosco College of Teacher Education (BCTE), Dimapur.
Fr. Chacko Karinthayil, Director of Shalom Rehabilitation Centre, Chümoukedima- was the main resource person.
A press release issued by Jonas Kerketta, BCTE Media Desk, Dimapur stated that under the topic ‘general aspects of alcoholism’ Fr. Chacko spoke about the meaning and characteristics of alcoholism, stages of alcoholism (Early warning signs, crucial stage & chronic stage). He summarily described alcohol addiction as ‘Modify Reality Withdrawal Syndrome’. He dealt with some of the DOs and DO’NTs to be kept in mind by the community workers and helpers.
Regarding counseling the alcoholics the resource person spoke about two major goals and four operational goals. He explained the physical effects of alcohol on addicts. He, moreover, highlighted the matter to be communicated in counseling. He then underlined the basic attitudes the counselors should have while counseling their clients.
The personal witness of one of the de-addicted clients of Shalom Rehabilitation Centre was something very moving and confirmed whatever the resource person had expounded in his three-hour long animation.
At the outset of the programme, Fr. Sabu Joseph sdb, BCTE principal, warmly welcomed Fr. Chacko Karinthayil and thanked him for having accepted to enlighten the teacher-trainees on one of the most wide-spread societal problems, namely alcohol addiction.
