Shamator, January 3 (MExN): As directed by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), the first phase of agitation started on January 3 in all Administrative headquarters “within Yimkhiung land in protest against the state government failure to declare Shamator district before December 31, 2021.”

A press release from YTC Media Cell stated that the demands for district upgradation started in 2003 and since then, several representation and reminder letters were submitted to the state government by YTC. “The state government has also assured YTC to fulfill the long aspirations of Yimkhiung people in lieu of unopposed NDPP MLA in the last by-election of 58 Shamator-Chessore A/C held on October 2021,” it stated.

However, the state government has been procrastinating citing varied reason in declaring the Shamator district, it added.
At Pungro town, various organizations responded to the call of YTC.

Government offices except the administration, bank, PHED, medical, police, power and paramilitary were shut down. All business establishments also joined the protest by putting their shutter down to show solidarity and support to YTC on first day of first phase of agitation.

WYH endorses demand
Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH) through its media cell has appealed to the Government of Nagaland (GON) for the early declaration of Shamator ADC to full-fledged district for the upliftment and overall development and also for administrative convenience of the Shamator Subdivision and the entire administrative circle that comes under the proposed Shamator District.

The WYH in its press release said, “The Yimkhiung tribe is the indigenous tribe of Nagaland which is the only tribe devoid of District therefore the community deserved to have a district of its own in tandem with other recognized tribes of Nagaland after asserting the genuine land demarcation claim of the parties.”

While conveying its appreciation for the decision of Chief Minister, Nagaland and its cabinet for declaring Shamator District “In principal” towards the Yimkhiung tribe, the WYH also extended its support for the Shamator district demand and reiterated its appeal to state government to address the long pending issue at the earliest.
