Shamator mêlée continues: Tikhir memorandum ‘baseless’: YAA

DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (MExN): Reacting to the memorandum submitted to Governor Shyamal Datta by the Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC), the Yimchunger Akheru Arihako (YAA), the apex body of the Yimchunger students’ community, today made a clarification by terming as ‘baseless’ the statements made by the TTC.

“Shamator Town has been recognized as Yimchunger H.Q since 1955 without any objection till today,” YAA President S Throngso and General Secretary Yapmule said in a rejoinder.

Making a counter-claim, the rejoinder said that while collections for materials towards the construction of the conference hall were being undertaken, “the outfit of the Tikhir sub-dialect with the help of ‘Limitsung’ terrorists’” on December 28 destroyed the amassed materials and on the same day fired at an old man, Shalem of Shamator Village, “following his refusal to comply with the dictates of the terrorists and not by the Yimchungers as alleged.”

“The next day, they also fired at Mr. Ahu, DB of Shamator Town while on his official duty without any valid reason. Consecutively, with the terrorists’ act, they shot dead Lirangse Sangtam of STF, NAP.”

Realizing the dangers posed, the Yimchunger public retaliated, resulting to the “injuring of three Tikhir terrorists and not the general public as alleged,” the rejoinder continued. Maintaining that the destruction of properties belonging to “the refugees in Shamator Town is not true,” the YAA replied that the question of the involvement of any administration, factions, NAP (IRB), Village Guards or MLAs sponsoring any organization “is totally their own ‘creation’ to mislead the general public and the Government.”

The rejoinder warned, “Therefore, fulfilling of the demands made by the so-called Tikhirs will lead to displacement of all the Tikhir-inhabited areas.”

According to a Telegraph report, the Yimchungers had reportedly served an ultimatum to the dissenting Tikhirs to come under their fold latest by January 3, failing which they would attack them, including Shamator town and Shamator village.
