Dimapur, Jan 2 (MExN): Buttressing its claims to distinct identity, Shamator Village Citizens Union also joins opposition to the holding of Yimchunger Students’ Union (YAA) conference in Shamator on the assertion that the Tikhir are a tribe with its own distinct identity and not under any other. The union in a release issued by it unit Presidents asserted that the Tikhirs would not remain victims “as we have come too far and gone too far from them”. The Tikhirs are a distinct tribe and no other tribe or organization have got any right to dominate or suppress our natural rights by fair or foul means, the union made clear in its statement. “Sangmutong (in Tikhir dialect) was the first name of Shamator but later on it was altered in recognition of the establishment of the town in 1955 by the Government of Nagaland. The place had been donated to the Government of Nagaland by the Tikhirs (Shamator village) for development” the union stated adding that this was not for any occasion including students’ conferences without the prior or written permission of the landowners.
The union also points out that crating unwanted situations would be detrimental since students are about to sit for their HSLC, HSSLC and degree examinations a few weeks from now on. The union urges the state government to intervene in the standoff to ensure peace otherwise “we will keep pace with in what way the Yimchungers are acting”. The union reiterates that Shamator is of the Tikhir community and intimidation from other or not, the Tikhirs will defend it.
