Sounds of automatic gunfire rattled Thilixu village, Chümoukedima district, on March 18, in a shooting incident suspected to be connected to an ongoing leadership feud in the NSCN-K (Khango). The shooting was epicentered around the Naga Political Group’s Ceasefire Supervisory Board office located in Thilixu village.
The shooting occurred around 8:15-8:30 am. According to the police, it was between the Isak Sumi-led and Khango Konyak-led sides of the NSCN-K. As reported widely in the news in recent months, Khango’s camp has contested the legitimacy of Isak’s position as the Ato Kilonser, while Isak’s camp contested Khango’s position as the President. It was followed by the Isak camp derecognising Khango as President and appointing another. Khango’s camp followed suit by installing Hukato Vusshe as the Ato Kilonser. It then went on to become a question of which side would take charge of the designated CFSB in Thilixu. Some 60 rounds were reported to have been fired during Saturday’s incident but it could not be verified whether it was an exchange of fire or one party trying to intimidate the other. There was no report of any casualty. None of the two groups or the police issued any statement with regard to the incident till the time of filing this report.
