Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Definitely. Is Democracy not about accountability and transparency? Just because a person is elected does not mean that he can do whatever he wants. At the end of the day, he is accountable to the people and to deliver upon the policies he adheres to. I can bet you that if the right to recall in Nagaland is applicable, than there will be a sea of change and the elected representative will not take the people for granted any longer.
• Yes, this is very much applicable for Nagaland. Here politicians spent crores during elections and after that they behave as if they own the people. Why cant they realize that the money they are spending does not belong to them. It belongs to the people. They should be ashamed. The new heights of corruption in Nagaland is a disgrace to our Christian beliefs and principles.
• There is no point sitting in da name of representation...its time 4 sumbody else to cum along n solve da problms..
• Yes, as they're for the welfare of public.
• Yes, b'coz if the elected representative cannot function efficiently n effectively for the people who elected him, with hope for their wellbeing, then the people have every right to recall him and put in the chair other representative(s) tat they consider fit.
• Yes, who needs a vessel with a hole? throw them out and get a new one which is capable of serving us
• Because people are the root foundation. If they dont work for people than what is the use they are entitled to, shameless creature, Public laga poisa khaise.
• Yes, NO WORK NO PAY….Govt should be what i expected not what they dream.
• yes, we should be able to because they ought to serve people with their everything, in true spirit as leaders.
• Yes, Because public have right power.
• Yes, if they are publicly elected then the public should recall then out of the office with a vote of no confident and against public interest.
• yes, it is of no use keeping a rotten apple in a basket full of fresh apples.
• I think Yes. Coz if der is a provision for recall, d electd representatives wud start workin for d public welfare fearin d worst.
• yes very much as we elect them we should have the power to recall. but unless the Indian constitution is amended it cannot be done. therefore we should work for constitutional amendment.
• yes, democracy comes with accountability. Elected officials have a mandate of the people. If they are not producing and milking development funds they must be recalled. It is done in many countries.
• wouldn't that be wonderful!!! Right now in Nagaland we do not have an effective checking mechanism nor do the decision makers care about the opinions of the people who voted them in the first place, and until some accountability is instilled, we shall never see progress. Our leaders seem to have all forgotten over the past 4 to 5 decades that when the whole community grows together we will all share in its development. probably they have realised that when they create this great divide among us by creating a class society based on wealth, they will be controlling those who have no option but to resort to their whims and fancies. But let us not forget too that this divide can create a lot of rogue elements, (which will be their own doing) when people cannot survive or have the lifestyle they see around them but can never afford them honestly when they are held by the throat. Look at our bureaucrats too, honestly with the salary they earn, do you honestly think they can build palatial homes or give their children the grandest facilities and have the lifestyles they have?? absolutely not if they were real Christians and honest officers!!! Compare them with the officers in the center who earn more then them as same grade officers and yet are so much poorer then them and are inundated with loan repayments... WE the people need to stop accepting and start asking questions of them until we are satisfied with their answers.. We lament on how people only want government jobs, well what do we expect, when we make it look like it is the only lucrative business?? Do we even have 10 percent of the officers and politicians who are honest?? Really time to think hard about what kind of a future our children will be having... We need to break this great divide!
• Definitely Yes if our constitution permit that. If we the people have the right to vote and elect our own representative than we should also have the power to recall them if they are proven to be inefficient and ineffective. If the law permits that would be a hack of a mechanism to check misuse of power and for the all round development of a State.
• Yes, because if the elected representatives who don’t function efficiently or effectively will ruin the government and we the public will have to suffer.
• Yes public should have the right to recall elected representatives who are not functioning efficiently and effectively. This is a highly commendable idea and will be incredible if it is implemented.
• What good is freedom if we are not able to live with our own rights, come forward and free our minds. People who care for the well being of the state need to take their rightly demands to the streets for the survival of this state and send this “inefficient clueless chalta hai babus” back to where they came from. Until they get this, so this is the plan, we have to stop, act, and recall them!!! It is our right, and for guaranteeing our rights and demands we are in contract with the govt, aren’t we?
• Is the right to recall not the basic mechanism of democracy? In a fast developing world, where democracy is now seen as a basic human rights, it is important that a country is not just democratic by name, but that it must have internal structures and institutions that are democratic in nature. If elected representatives are not upholding their responsibilities to serve the people and ensure the security, development and welfare of the people, than they have no right to represent the people. So yes, the right to recall is a must for the people.
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• I don’t support the right to recall because it will be abused and misused by the different political parties for their own advantage and the public will be squeezed in between them. There should be a better way to hold the elected representatives accountable.
• When an average citizen is selling his vote for some amount of money, it is difficult to believe that money power will not be used to ensure that the right to recall is abused for selfish motive.
• As long as the system of our society is transform and reform at the ground level; this policy will not help.
• Who will implement it? The people may have the right to recall, but the implementing body will become the most corrupted agency. This is not practical in Nagaland.
Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• Unless the people of Nagaland are empowered and are aware and concerned about public issues such as corruption, good governance, and due process, it will be difficult. Ultimately the real and true power lies with the people, but if the people do not know how to exercise their power, what is the point of having the right to recall.
• It will have to go through Indian parliament bill.
• Ideally, the concept of right to recall is necessary in any democratic country. The democratic exercise of elections does not end with casting of the ballot paper. In fact it is only the beginning. The right to recall is part and parcel of the democratic exercise of elections and you see that different countries do have the right to recall. However, I am not sure to what extent the right to recall can actually work in Nagaland. In the presence of large scale corruption and abuse of power, the right to recall maybe abused and politicized. If the right to recall is to be implemented in Nagaland, we also have to make sure that the other democratic institutions are also strengthened.
