Those who voted YES had this to say:
• Yes, one of the main reason is because they would be surrounded by like minded people and would enjoy their company also. They can share their thoughts, books that they have read and talk about the Naga political situation… I guess!! Ha Ha ..jokes apart, I think old age home is much needed.
• Yes... there should be. If at all we have reached a situation where there is no time to take care of our old, handicapped parents... It is good for the oldies, but a Big shame of the so called ‘young generation’
• Yes, the old age needs attention and care like a child. An NGO should set up ‘old age homes’ where lots of activities could be carried out for their well being. if not the welfare department of the govt should set up well being and security of the old age.
• Yes, as in the old age home the senior citizens can find better care and support as we Nagas are still financially, economically and intellectually very backward.
• Yes, there should be old age home for the senior citizens cause not all of them are well taken care of at home. Working parents and kids don’t have time to look after them. Elders feel better with people their age.
• God cares for them
• They truly deserves it, but so sad that the so called ministers’ mouth are wide open even to those privileges. Let it be there for the old aged.
• So that they can feel loved and pampered even in that age, and also in circumstances where they are often taken for granted or neglected.
• To spend their old age securely
Those who voted NO had this to say:
• No way, if you look at the west you will find that they die quicker and earlier. Older people are not a curse but a very important asset to the family. It is the sons and daughters duty to take care of the older ones. The local community should take responsibility to insure that they are taken care of by there family. In India a new law has been passed where the parents can sue the children for upkeep if they fail to do so. Therefore it shows that it is the children and local community responsibility.
• Parents are to be taken care of no matter what - this is Naga culture, no matter what tribe it is. Though people are having more and more hectic jobs, it is the duty of the children to take care of their parents. Personally, I wouldn’t like to spend my old age in a Home, and neither will you like that. I want to be with my children and my grandchildren. We Nagas have to be careful here; taking care of our parents and grandparents is most the beautiful thing one can do!
• Instead there should be counseling centre to help them feel a sense of worth inspite of their old age. Putting them in old-age homes could make them feel rejected and abandoned by their family members or relatives.
• Every parent should be looked after by their children or relatives in a Christian state like Nagaland
Others:
• What with so many youths being killed daily, will there be any one to look after the aged later???
