
Dimapur, September 17 (MExN): A national webinar on ‘Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics’ organized by the Department of Physics, St Joseph’s College (Autonomous) in collaboration with the IQAC of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, was held on the September 17 with participants from different colleges and universities.
Updates from the College informed on Friday that the webinar began with a welcome address from Rev Fr Peter Solo, Dean of Science, followed by a talk on the topic, ‘India’s Involvement in Mega Projects in Astronomy’ by resource person Prof Ranjan Gupta, Head of IGO, IUCAA, Pune. The resource person highlighted the different astronomy projects that India is involved with and the various opportunities where students can also learn by being part of the projects.
The second session was also addressed by Prof Ranjan Gupta who spoke on the topic, ‘A Career in Astronomy and Astrophysics.’ Prof Gupta discussed the various career opportunities in Astronomy and Astrophysics for young people, particularly students of Physics. The final session was addressed by Samir Dhurde, Scientific Officer (Public Outreach), IUCAA, Pune, who talked on ‘Ways to Study the Sky by Yourself,’ and elucidated about the different ways to observe and study the sky and the celestial bodies therein. The webinar concluded with a vote of thanks by Thejano Mekro, Head, Department of Physics, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, the release stated.
