DIMAPUR, JULY 30 (MExN): The All Sumi Students' Union (SKK) and the Western Sumi Students' Union (WSSU) have raised strong objections to the proposed candidacy of a non-local individual for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland. Both organizations argued that such a move threatens the rights and interests of the indigenous Naga community and undermines their cultural identity and autonomy.
The SKK expressed concern that including non-locals in ULBs could compromise the well-being of the community, exacerbating complex issues and putting ancestral lands, resources, and heritage at risk. They demanded that ULBs be exclusively comprised of indigenous Naga members to ensure that the voices representing the community’s concerns are genuinely reflective of their needs. The SKK called on the Chief Minister to reject the proposed candidate and take decisive steps to protect the rights and interests of the Naga people.
Echoing these concerns, the WSSU supported the Naga Students' Federation's (NSF) call for maintaining reserved positions in ULBs for indigenous Nagas. They emphasized the importance of having representatives who understand and reflect the community they serve. According to the WSSU, indigenous representation is crucial for authentic decision-making and upholding the unique cultural and social values of the Naga community.
They cautioned that non-indigenous nominees might dilute the focus on issues specific to the Naga population and advocate for a governance structure that remains true to their heritage and needs.
Both unions urged the government to consider their perspectives and support the preservation of reserved seats for indigenous Nagas, ensuring that local governance remains aligned with the community’s aspirations and identity.
