DIMAPUR, APRIL 10 (MExN): Sakus Mission College (SMC) organised a cultural day on April 9 on the theme ‘Nurture Culture.’

The programme was jointly organised by the Departments of English, Sociology and History in collaboration with IQAC to create awareness on the need to nurture and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Naga forefathers.

The day began with the sounding of a gong and welcome cries by the leaders of some of the troupes. Martin from 6th semester chaired the programme while Asenla Yanger, Principal, SMC welcomed the gathering.

Speaking on the theme, Asst Prof John Zarench, Department of English, said that just as the meaning of the word ‘culture’ implies ‘ to cultivate ‘ or ‘to honor’, the older generations have taught the present generation to cultivate and honor ones own dress, food, language , traditional  industries and ethical culture.

Yet they are being replaced by other foreign culture while ours is on the brink of extinction, he said. He reiterated that people should not only nurture culture during festivals but also in their daily lives. He impressed upon the audience that it is not only a choice but a responsibility to nurture ones culture and hand them down to future generations.

Altogether 11 troupes dressed in their colourful traditional attires enthralled the gathering which consisted of special invitees, alumni and parents. Indigenous food and brew stalls and display of Naga artifacts and Naga indigenous games were hallmarks of the event.

An enactment was also done by the Department of English and Ao Naga troupe was declared the best performers and Onglung Phom of 4th semester won the War Cry contest.

HoD Sociology, Mhontung Ezung delivered the vote of thanks.
