LONGLENG, JUNE 6 (DIPR): The 55th anniversary of ‘Phom Day’ was celebrated among the Phom Nagas in district headquarter Longleng on June 6 with the Governor of Nagaland, K. Sankaranarayanan as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Sankaranarayanan said that the history of ‘Phom Day’ dates back to 55 years ago, when, on this day Phom forefathers pledged to be peaceful, putting behind the practice of headhunting and also be loyal to the Government. ‘Today we pay homage to the wisdom...in embracing modernity,’ he said.
The Governor congratulated the people for successfully maintaining the tradition of ‘Phom Day.’ He also assured to support and take up with the state Government with regard to the initiative for development of Longleng district. He said that the concept of ‘Phom Day’ celebrations is a reminder of the past and also of forgetting and forgiving the past mistakes and coming forward and co-existing in harmony.
It may be recalled that on June 6, 1952, all the Phom people came together and pledged themselves to the government that they will not be vengful but live in peace. On that day’s celebration people came together and reinforce the bond and pledge through common celebration, culminating on the most significant day.
MLA and advisor to DUDA, M. Chenlom Phom and Deputy Commissioner of Longleng Wepretso Mero also delivered short speeches respectively.
Cultural folk dances were performed by Longleng Town Pongo Union and a ‘female dance’ by Longleng Town Hukpangla formed part of the entertainment hour. The function was attended by all government officials of the district.
Earlier, the chief guest was welcomed by beating of traditional log drums. The invocation and scripture reading was pronounced by Executive Secretary of PBCA, C. Amop Noklang; recitation of Phom Day poem was made by Yangli Government College Students, while the vote of thanks was offered by president of Phom Day Celebrations, Y. Alemchuba.
