The Soyim Students’ Union hosted a celebration of the Tsüngremmong festival or the harvest festival of the Ao Nagas at Yimtsungta Arok Sapang, Ungma village on August 1. Er Imsapang Imsong, Executive Engineer of the Mechanical Department, PWD, Mokokchung Division, Government of Nagaland, graced the event as chief guest.
Themed on “Telongjem Jenmong Ji Sobaliba” which is loosely translated as “Culture is the Foundation of Unity,” the event commenced with a welcome address by Rongsen T Imsong, President of Soyim Students’ Union. Following this, seniors from the union performed a traditional Tsüngremmong celebration tune. Guru Rarenbenba Longkumer then spoke about the festival’s significance, stressing the need to preserve and value culture. He urged students to engage with their cultural heritage, emphasising its impact on life.

Addressing the occasion, Er Imsapang Imsong highlighted the importance of leading a culturally rich life, explaining that “Sobaliba (cultures)” means “to be born and to live.” He underlined that embracing cultural practices such as traditional eating habits, social etiquette, and respectful forms of address is essential for progress. Additionally, he emphasised the importance of academic dedication and prioritizing spiritual values.
The celebration featured various competitions, including top spinning, fire making, winnowing, tug-of-war, and cultural dance, aiming to promote cultural preservation and appreciation among students.
