The electricity project from Science & Technology, Government of India touched the rural village Thuvopisu under Phek district as Governor of Nagaland K. Sankaranarayanan switched on Thuvopisu Microhydel Project here this morning.

Unveiling a plague and switching on the power house, Governor termed the project as “excellent initiative.”

Reminding that Nagaland is producing only a fraction of the required power, he advised the people of the state to look for alternatives such as the micro-hydel projects for meeting energy needs, particularly as they are also environment-friendly. He reminded that Nagaland requires power supply of 85 MW whereas the supply is only about 25% of the requirement during the dry season and 50-60% during the monsoons. ‘Only 12 to 15 MW of our consumption is being generated by the state government’s power plants,’ he pointed out.

Sankaranarayanan said with the successful completion of the project, the village has achieved self-reliance in electricity and urged the villagers to ensure that the project runs smoothly. Also commending the dedication the villagers showed in the implementation, he assured that that the village will no longer be dependent on the irregular power supply of the Power Department.

Also, maintaining that a conducive climate has to be created to bring in more investment to Nagaland and speed up development, he asserted that “each individual, each village and each community has a role to play in this effort towards peace and development.”

Insisting that peace in Nagaland still remains fragile and shallow, the Governor urged, “We cannot afford to let things be as they are”.

In this age of globalization, the world is experiencing a high rate of economic growth, he said.

The generation capacity of this project, the second of its kind in the state, stands at 2x50 KW.

Minister for Science and Technology, IT &TE, Education Imkong L. Imchen informed that 50 similar projects will be implemented shortly across the state as assurance given by Minister of State for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal during his recent visit to the state.

Dr. Laxman Prasad, senior advisor, department of Science & Technology said that with the commissioning of the project, continuous power will be available, adding that quality power is essential. He also complimented the Nagaland Science and Technology Council, NGOs and villagers toward the completion of the project.

Chief Secretary Lalhuma was optimistic that the villagers will make the best use of power in improving the economic status and make it as a model for others.

Dr. Zavei Hiese said that the cost of the project has touched Rs. 90.22 lakhs where 90 per cent is funded by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and another 10 percent borne by village community and Nagaland Science and Technology Council.

This is a unique project using indigenous technology and will be managed by the village community, source said.

Later, the Governor and Imkong donated Rs. 1 lakh each while minister for agriculture donated Rs. 50,000 towards the project.

MLAs Medokul, Deo Nukhu, Parliamentary Secretary Kaito, Commissioner and Secretary Temjen Toy, NBSE secretary Nini Meru, ex-speaker Z. Lohe, Brig. HGV Singh, commander 5 Sector Assam Rifles, Col.
