Dimapur, August 8 (MExN): The Department of Botany of St Joseph University (SJU) organized a webinar on ‘Algal Biotechnology for Bioenergy, Bioremediation and High-Value Biochemicals’ on August 7. The guest speaker was Dr Santhos Kumar Kookal, a Research Scientist from the Metabolic Engineering Group, Biofuel and Industrial Biotechnology Division, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, a press release from the University informed on Sunday.
The webinar was attended by faculty members, research scholars and students from the SJU Department of Botany. Assistant professor of the department Mebin Joseph welcomed the guest speaker and other participants while Head of Department Dr Nidheesh KS introduced the resource person.
Dr Santhosh started with explaining the importance of algal biotechnology in various industries such as food industry, biofuel production and bioremediation. He also explained various methods for isolation, and cultivation of algae and discussed the current global market products of algae, various aspects of algae as a source of bioenergy and biofuels and future prospects of bioremediation using algae. He concluded the discussion stating that algae is a promising crop that can solve the energy and pollution problems of the world, the release stated.
