St Joseph’s College secures patent for superabsorbent hydrogel

Jakhama, April 13 (MExN): St Joseph's College (Autonomous), Jakhama, has announced the publication of its first patent by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), Government of India.

The patent, titled “Citric Acid Crosslinked Gelatin–Poly Acrylic Acid-Co-Sodium Acrylate Superabsorbent Hydrogel,” has been developed by Dr Duangailung Kamei, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.

The invention presents an environmentally friendly, highly absorbent material capable of absorbing and retaining large amounts of water. It has potential applications in agriculture, hygiene products, and environmental management.

According to the college press release, the material remains effective even in saline conditions and can absorb water exceeding ten times its own weight under controlled conditions.

College authorities said, “This achievement marks a significant step in strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem of the college and sets a foundation for future academic advancements.”
