Kohima, May 21 (DIPR): The department of Food & Civil Supply has introduced in the State a Paddy Procurement Policy 2004 (PPP) to protect the farmers against exploitation by middlemen and to ensure them the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy.
According to the Annual Report 2007-08, more supply pockets of paddy in the state are in the process of being identified to cover more farmers under the policy. The state government is keen to strengthen and invigorate the Paddy Procurement Policy in all respects so that farming continues to be a dependable mainstay in Nagaland.
It has also mentioned in the Report that due to unprecedented crops failure and severe scarcity of monsoon rains, there were reports of poor harvesting from every district across the entire State and thus, under the prevailing circumstances, paddy from the farmers of those identified paddy producing areas could not be procured during the year 2006-07 and 2007-08. The department plays a pivotal role in reducing and ultimately eradicating poverty in the state by executing objectivity and equitably the schemes of the central government in this regard.
