State meets over crime against women

The State government convened a joint meeting here today in the conference hall of the chief secretary, with the Nagaland State Women Commission and other stakeholders. Among those who attended the joint meeting included the chief secretary and representatives from the police, law department, women commission and the NBCC besides the secretary of Women Development, additional director for Women Development and the Naga Mothers’ Association.

Among the many agendas which figured at the meeting, were points raised by the Nagaland Commission for Women to address the alarming increase in crimes against women. The meeting discussed the need to set up Fast Track Courts to deliver speedy justice to victims and to award exemplary punishment to culprits. To achieve these goals, it was made tacit that the police, the judiciary, civil society and the media would have to work hand in hand.

Other agendas discussed at the joint meeting included follow-up to the report on the rape cases against women in Nagaland tabled in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The meeting also discussed on the action taken so far with regard to the inquiry report and recommendations submitted by the Nagaland Women Commission to the chief secretary on May 5 on the rape cases at Dimapur and Zunheboto. It was also informed that measures were discussed to provide immediate relief or rehabilitation to rape victims and victims of domestic violence, at the earliest. The meeting also deliberated on fixing a suitable date for a state-level legal awareness seminar either at Dimapur or Kohima for all tribal women hohos, NGOs, and the Naga Hoho.
