State spends Rs 200 crores on education

KOHIMA, JAN 11, (MExN): Minister for higher education Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu said the Nagaland government spends around Rs. 200 crore annually on the education sector.

The minister told a public function Tuesday that the government has spent Rs. 179 crore on school education and another Rs. 12.50 crore on higher education during the period 2004-05.

Despite the late beginning of formal education in the state, it witnessed high acceleration in its growth, the minister said. Today, the state enjoys a literacy rate of 67.11 per cent.

The minister said much focus has been made on the education sector in Nagaland for overall development of the State. There are over 4, 36,000 students in 2,363 education institutions including higher secondary ones. Over 20,000 teachers are engaged in these establishments. There are 21,588 college students in 58 colleges across the state. The strength of lecturers stands at 1,123.
