Statewide ‘pollution campaign’ launched

Kohima, May 13 (MExN): A statewide awareness campaign for pollution control was launched here at the official residence of M C Konyak, Minister for forest, environment, ecology & wildlife and excise. The campaign, which is a build-up to the World Environment Day to be observed on June 5, was organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) under the aegis of the department of Forest & Environment, Nagaland.

Briefing the media, Konyak noted that pollution has become a global problem, adding that with changes in the environment at a global scale it is increasingly affecting the health of mankind. New diseases which we hadn’t heard about in the past like bird flu, avian flu, swine flu, etc., rapidly invade the lives of human beings, he said.

Referring to precautionary measures against diseases, he said it is the responsibility of every citizen to be well aware of controlling pollution in one’s own vicinity. The Forest department in consultation with the Board is tirelessly trying its best and giving its best efforts to work out for a better world to live in thereby calling the citizens of the state to give unflinching cooperation to the department for speedy and effective results in the long run, Konyak told the media.

Raising concerns over the harmful affects of waste materials, Konyak suggested the need for them to be disposed of ‘in a safe manner’. He also called upon citizens to contribute their own share to this process. Climate change is taking place only due to the environment pollution which adversely effects the whole human environment, asserted Konyak.

According to Rongsengwati, chairman of the Nagaland Pollution Control Board, the campaign is being organised in the form of publicity campaign in all the districts as part of the build-up to the forthcoming World Environment Day. The campaign has been initiated in all the districts of Nagaland with 3 different slogan posters – ‘Water, elixir of life, conserve it’, ‘Keep air & water free from pollution’, and ‘Do not litter, keep your environment clean’. The NPCB, in implementation of its motto Cleaner & Healthier Nagaland, has dispatched all the 3 poster campaigns to all the 2107 eco-clubs in the schools in Nagaland.
