Stepping stone towards women’s representation at NLA: NDPP

Hails March 9 Resolutions on ULBs, Indo-Naga issue

Kohima, March 10 (MExN): The NDPP has hailed the March 9 resolution on Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) as a red letter day for Nagaland and called it ‘stepping stone towards having women representatives in the people’s house, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.’ The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) also noted that the party has always stood for the early resolution of the Indo-Naga issue and welcomed other resolution passed on the issue at the consultative meeting organised by the State Government in Kohima on Wednesday.

Apart from government side, the consultative meeting was attended by other stakeholder including Tribal Hohos, Civil Society Organisations, Churches and NGO’s and political parties.

The meeting unanimously passed a resolution that the ULBs election ‘should be’ held under the 74th Amendment of the Constitution of India, paving way for women’s reservation as mandated by the constitutional provision.

The conduct of the ULB elections and having elected members run the ULBs would expedite all round development in the urban areas and immensely help in uplifting the lives of the people, the NDPP noted.

“The NDPP has from its inception been a strong advocate and supporter of gender equality and it has been our endeavour to work towards this goal,” it maintained.

The unanimous passing of the resolution would be a further encouragement for our women to step forward in leading the people and will also be a stepping stone towards having women representatives the Assembly, it added.

Meanwhile, the NDPP stated that it ‘always stood for the early resolution of the Indo-Naga issue and have been supporting the positive negotiations between all the negotiating parties.’

The NDPP appreciates and supports the resolution calling for the negotiating parties to arrive at a political solution that is honourable, inclusive, transparent and acceptable to the people and to work towards One Solution and One Agreement, it added.

Congratulating the State government Chief Minister and other attendees of the meeting for the two-point resolution, the party also affirmed its support to the decisions taken by the Government of Nagaland and all stakeholders.

It further appealed the Government of Nagaland and the people of the State to work hand in hand in making the resolutions a reality with a vision to make a new Nagaland.
