Wokha, June 15 (MExN): “We still have a long way to go to reach the benchmark of quality education for all our citizens,” the Governor of Nagaland, La. Ganesan remarked on Thursday.
Addressing a meeting with Head of Office and Civil Societies Organisation in Wokha during his visit to the district on June 15, the Governor reiterated that “elementary education is a constitutional right and along with this right we must ensure quality education.”
He said that through flagship programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rastriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Project Nectar (funded by the World Bank), the Government has provided better school infrastructure and have appointed teachers and posted them to schools with insufficient teachers, a DIPR report stated.
“Programmes and initiatives of the Government like providing free text books, mid-day meals and free elementary education have re-defined the role of the state in the educational system,” he added.
“It is my endeavour and wish that every district in Nagaland have the four basic infrastructures namely education, adequate health care, good roads and adequate banking facilities,” he conveyed.
Commenting the Wokha has been aptly called ‘The Land of Plenty,’ the Governor said, “And we have to live up to our reputation and become the food bowl of the state. It is my earnest wish and desire to see Wokha as a developed district one day and contributing immensely to the state as well as the Nation.”
“Let us all uphold the rich legacy left behind by our forefathers and we have to let peace prevail in our land to allow development to flourish in our land,” he urged.
While speaking on health care service in the district, he said, “it is an important focus area and quality healthcare should be our ultimate goal.”
The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) started in the year 2008 by the Government of India to improve the health care delivery system in the rural areas has boosted the health sector in a big way. Today, so many government health related schemes are in operation including Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and our state’s own CM Health Insurance Scheme.
“I urge upon the concerned departments to take these government schemes to the doorsteps of the citizens so that the common citizen is benefited,” the Governor said.
The Governor also impressed upon everyone the need to be good model citizens for the state as well as for the country. “As good citizens, we have to be law abiding and also co-operate and work hand in hand with government- both at the centre and in the state. We have to reaffirm our commitment to the democratic values and ideals enshrined in our constitution. We have to work harder in our march towards a united, strong and prosperous nation,” he said.
During the meeting, Wokha Civil Societies Organization headed by Lotha Hoho and comprising 11 other organizations submitted a memorandum on behalf of the Lotha community. It was submitted by Lotha Hoho Chairman, Er Mhondamo Ovung, requesting the Governor for “either handing over of the Wokha-Bokajan road to Border Roads Organization (BRO) or to sanction for taking up the road construction project.” The Governor assured to take up the matter to the concerned ministry on priority to ensure that it is implemented.
Department of Health & Family Welfare, PHED, Lead Bank District Manager, Forest, Environment and Climate Change, NEEPCO, PWD (R&B) presented their departmental activities undertaken in the district to the Governor.
