Students irked by expulsion of villagers

DIMAPUR, JUNE 20 (MExN): The Eastern Sumi Students’ Union has strongly condemned the ‘quit notice’ issued to Sumis in Seyochung Village “by the Deputy Commissioner, Kiphire basing on Seyochung Village Council.”

Terming the decision as “immature” and a “violation of human rights,” the student body said in a statement that “one cannot change the custom, identity, culture and tradition” in any person.

The State government has been asked to intervene immediately and “provide relief to the innocent victims’ family and (to) protect their lives.”

Pledging full support to the All Sumi Students’ Union and the Sumi Hoho, the Eastern Sumi Students’ Union hoped that “justice will be provided on your (government’s) intervention.”

They have also sought the cooperation of the Sangtam Hoho and the Sangtam Students’ Union towards solving the issue and maintaining “age old brotherhood among the two tribes living in Seyochung Village.”

Meanwhile, the Satoi Range Students’ Union has extended “full support” to various Sumi bodies in condemning the resolution of the Seyochung Village Council “which is the most barbaric resolution in recent past.”

“The ‘quit notice’ served to the Sumi community of Seyochung Village needs to be awarded with the worst condemnation. The very notice has raised a question in us as to whether there was at least a single educated/civilized individual present while passing the resolution.”

The Satoi Range Students’ Union has urged upon the government to “have a closer look into the situation and prove their people friendly governance, so that the innocent villagers are not deprived of their rights.” The students have also urged both communities in the village to maintain the “status quo of age old brotherly relation.”
