Wokha, May 19 (MExN): Peace Channel organized one-day capacity building programme at Little Angel School, Wokha on May 19 on the topic ‘Gender and Peace’ aiming to sensitize the students on gender inequality and eradicate them from minds, hearts and actions and also to encourage them to promote gender equality between men and women. All together 47 students participated for the programme.
Addressing the students, Peace Activist, Patrick W. Tungoe stated that gender and peace are closely linked, peace is vital to promote gender equality, while gender inequality can also undermine peace and drive conflict and violent. He elucidated that because of gender discrimination, women are affected the most as they do not have the equal opportunity as men for education, meaningful careers, political positions and economic advancements. He also added that, women too deserve a life with opportunities to be educated, to work, to be healthy and to participate in all aspects of life. He further added that the emancipation of women, is one of the most important, though less acknowledge prerequisites of peace and the denial of such equality perpetrates an injustice against one-half of the world’s population, carried from the family to the work place, to political and social life.
He urged the male participants to respect and protect the rights of women and eradicate the concept of “enter a men’s world and compete on an equal basis” from its mindset. He further called the participants to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity by committing as a leader and spearheading within their own spheres of influence.
He also encouraged the participants to promote genuine equality between men and women by planting the idea of respect for human rights.
