Some headway appears to have been made today in the talks between the NSCN (IM) and the Centre held at Delhi today. VS Atem, Emissary to the Collective Leadership of the Naga group, stated that “substantial progress” was made in the today’s discussions.
He said both sides “respected” and “accommodated” each other’s views and added that “the problem would be solved in due course of time.” Though we “had good talks”, details of the parleys, however, cannot be divulged at this juncture, Atem said.
The talks lasted for over two hours and according to agency sources the demand for unification of Naga-inhabited areas was a key talking point. Recent clashes between rival rebel factions and a “charter of demands” given by the NSCN-IM were also reportedly discussed.
The Central team comprised Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of State for Home S Regupathy, Minister of State for PMO Prithviraj Chavan, interlocutor K Padmanabhaiah, Home Secretary V K Duggal and Home Secretary-designate Madhukar Gupta. The NSCN-IM team was led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah.
