DIMAPUR: The Sumi Council, Half Nagarjan, Dimapur, has refuted and condemned the statement issued by certain individuals in the name of the Sumi community which appeared in some local papers claiming that the community had decided not impose DMC taxes on land and buildings to private land and building owners.

Issuing a clarification signed by Hukavi T Yepthomi, Secretary, and Dolovi Sumi, Senior citizen, the Council stated that the Sumi community of Half-Nagarjan had never conducted any public meeting on August 20 and that the community in particular did not have the power to impose taxes until and unless empowered by the concerned authorities.

It also stated that the Sumi community had never agreed or disagreed over the imposition of taxes by the DMC and that the community would find and identify the individuals responsible for using the name of the Sumis for selfish interests and initiate appropriate action against them.

The Council further clarified that the press communiqué purportedly issued by Dolovi, GB, Viniho, Chairman and Akavi Secretary of the community befooled the writer himself since Dolovi was only a proposed GB who was yet to be considered by the authority concerned and that the official Secretary was Hukavi T Yepthomi and not as rendered in the ‘so-called press communiqué.’
