DIMAPUR, AUGUST 5 (MExN): The Sumi Hoho today issued a public notice opposing the use of the term “Sumiya” or “Sumiyas”, which it said has been doing the rounds in various media platforms. A press note from the Sumi Hoho stated that this term has no official recognition, and lamented that it is being “directly associated with intermarriage between the Sumi Naga women and Bengali-speaking Muslim men.” Stating that it is not only the Sumi women involved in the intermarriage, it said that “such unofficial term being associated with it, is demeaning, defaming and derogatory.” “The Sumi Nagas, like any other Nagas, is equally concerned with the menace of illegal immigrants and we are doing our part to secure Naga society from such foreign invasions,” it added. It further cautioned that if “any statements demeaning the image of the Sumi people is found posted or printed in the electronic or print media or social networking sites, the Hoho will take very serious note of it and take stringent legal course of action as deemed fit.”
