Dimapur, June 5 (MExN): Calling the FGN a ‘confused organization,’ Sumi civil society today strongly made clear to the underground organization that the case of the murder of a civilian and torture of another on May 21, is never settled. The civil frontal organizations have also demanded from the state government that action be taken against the erring cadres and a report to that effect be made public without further delay.
A strongly-worded statement was issued as a result of a June 2 joint meeting of Pughoboto Area GBs Association, Dimapur Sumi Aphuyemi Kaqhakulu, Kohima Aphuyemi Sumi Kaqhakulu, Aphuyemi Kiphimi Kaqhakilu and Ighanumi Village Council. The meeting, held in Kohima, examined the matter and clarified on the statement issued by one “captain” ND Bikou of the FGN that was carried on May 23 in the local media; the statement of “Brig.” Tokugha Zhimo “6th B commander cum supervisor” Sumi region, FGN, which appeared on May 30.
A release jointly issued by the organizations stated that Bikou, in his statement mentioned that one “SS major” Obed Awomi of Vieho village was not an FGN cadre but belonged to the Zhopra Vero Chakhesang group “and he disowned the Ighanumi village in order to hide the ugly and cowardice act of FGN cadre on innocent civilian.”
However, the press statement issued on May 30 by ‘Brig.” Tokugha owned up the responsibility of murdering one Nishena and torturing another, one Vikha Kiba. He had further clarified that the FGN “government” had ‘forgiven’ “SS Major” Obed Awomi.
Implying that the two press statements contradicted each other, the Sumi civil frontal organizations termed the FGN as “really a confused organization” and does not know “who are their cadres and who is not.” The FGN forgave “SS Major” Obed “alerting of his precious life”, the Sumi organizations stated while questioning that if a criminal like “SS Major” Obed can be considered precious, why not Nishena or Vikha Kiba.
On the claim of the FGN that Obed has been forgiven, the organizations observed how an accused could forgive another accused. “FGN tried to hide their ugly deed but when everything (came) to light, they tried to be softened (sic). Is it not a shame on FGN?” the release stated.
The organizations made clear to the FGN that the matter has not been settled but rather a detailed deliberation on the issue is being undertaken by the civil society. They also flayed the state government for its ‘silence.’ “Can the public really feel safe to work under the government? Government wants its servants to work tirelessly when the servants are in good health, but when the servants (are) faced with difficulty, it remains silent; then how can we depend on government?” the organizations wondered.
The Sumi organisations also asked the state government is asked to initiate action against the culprits and the action-taken report be made public without any further delay.
