Tura, August 7 (NNN): In an effort to ensure their well-being as well as work towards the development of society, surrendered members of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) recently opened a society after a meeting between themselves on April 22. The new society was formed under the banner of United People’s Welfare Society and will be led by former cadres Benjamin Marak and Anurag Sangma as president and secretary respectively. The society has its headquarters at Tambo Gittim at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills and was registered in EGH last week. “We aim to help those who are deprived and to take up socio economic programs to uplift society. We also want to help in uplifting the living standards of the people of Garo Hills, take up welfare programs, preservation of forest and flora and fauna, promote education amongst others,” said Anurag Sangma. “We want to do everything that we can legally do to better ourselves as well as the people around us. We will work at the grassroot level to ensure that we uplift ourselves as well as those around us,” added Benjamin Marak.
