
Unsound economic condition major reason for not attending schools

Under state’s school education department, a sample survey and identification of Out of School Children (15-16 years) was carried out during 2012-13 in the state, covering five villages in all 45 educational Block Resource Centres in the state. It covered 225 villages out of 1096 making it 20.52 % coverage, according to the annual administrative report of the school education department. The objective of the survey is to know the types of Out of School Children and gender gap, the reasons for not attending schools and to plan specific intervention for Out of School Children.
In findings, a total of 2301 Out of School Children between 15-16 years of age were identified. Out of these 60.97% are male and 39.03% are female clearly indicating comfortable position as far as gender issue is concerned. Out of 2301 identified, 82.55% constitute drop out and only 17.77% are never enrolled. Out of the total 82.55% drop out children 82.22% dropping out at elementary stage and only 17.44% drop out at secondary stage.
Similarly, under reasons for not attending schools the categories are many but majority of them, for example 57.40% of them related to unsound economic condition, 18.17% are due to continuous failure, 8.82% due to disability and 16.82% of them due to other reasons.
