Sustainable agriculture through integrated farming

Mr. Thungyamo Yanthan’s mixed farm school is located at Satsuphen, some 10 kilometers away from Wokha town towards Kohima, below NH 61. The farm land purchased in 1988 was initially confined only to cultivating patches of vegetables and a small paddy field. Seeing the potential of the farm, on July 19, 2011, ATMA, Wokha block pitched in towards establishing a mixed farming school. Twelve more farmers were enrolled to assist Thungyamo.

The components incorporated in the farm school include paddy cultivation, fishery, piggery and banana cultivation. Logistic support, as well as farm inputs was given to the school at the time of establishment.

The same year, a jubilant Thungyamo reported harvesting the maximum quantity of rice as compared to previous years which was 87 tins (1200 kgs) and expressed appreciation for the timely intervention provided by ATMA, Wokha block. He maintained that in previous years, grain production was very low and at most, the maximum harvest reached only up to 560-600 kgs of grain because of severe rice stem borer infestation. At the peak of egg laying by the RSB moth, Block Technology Manager, Wokha block along with KVK (ICAR) subject expert team imparted a demonstration on methods of application of Trico card in the farmers’ field.

Taking into consideration the potential of the area and seeing the sincerity of the farmer, KVK, Wokha also intervened with strong technical support from its subject experts and a scientist from ICAR, Nagaland Centre.

Now, the farm is not only considered as an income generating farm but also serve as a model for adoption of technologies by other farmers of the district. Thungyamo’s farm not only grows agri and horticulture crops but has also integrated piggery, duckery and dairy units. Thungyamo earns an income of Rs.1.5-2 lakhs annually.
