Swu in Nagaland; NSCN-IM to knock UN door over peace talks

Dimapur, Jan 4 (MExN): Arriving Hebron Camp, Dimapur, today NSCN-IM Chairman Isak Chishi Swu said to appeal for intervention of the United Nations into the Indo-Naga peace talks and for this Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN would be approached. Also, former UN chief Koffi Annan has already been apprised on the appeal, he said.

“We are appealing for the intervention of the United Nations into the impasse of the Indo-Naga peace talks. We have requested the former Secretary General of the UN to intervene into our issue and we are going to ask the present secretary General of the UN also” Swu informed the welcome function at Hebron today. Chairman Swu and his lady wife Uster Chishi Swu, Mrs. Ikris Muivah, wife of the Ato Kilonser were welcomed at Hebron with a “guard of honor” for the chairman.

Exhorting the gathering, Isak Swu expressed gratitude to God for “safely enabling them to reach home despite various dangers on their route”. “The Nagas have been struggling for regaining our rights for nearly 60 years and today we are at the negotiating table with the government of India. Though the peace talks have entered into 10 years now becoming the longest negotiation in the world, yet we have been unable to arrive at any breakthrough” he said lamenting that the GOI has yet to translate into reality its acknowledgement of the Nagas’ situation as unique. He however informed of appealing the UN for intervention into the “impasse” of the Indo-Naga peace talks.

One a more subtle side, Swu called upon the people to “surrender before God first” because “our sovereignty is in the hands of God only”. Sharing from the Bible, the Chairman said: “If we surrender ourselves to God, he will surely bless us. We have to repent and surrender before God first. Our sovereignty is neither in our hands nor in the hands of India, China, UN etc. It is in the hands of God only”.

Chairman Swu and his lady wife Uster Chishi Swu, Mrs. Ikris Muivah, wife of the Ato Kilonser landed India Wednesday. Swu, on arriving Dimapur was whisked right away to Hebron Camp (the outfit’s HQ) under a ‘Z’ category cover. NSCN-IM sources said the security was necessitated following an earlier threat from the rival faction NSCN-K, in the event the two leaders “set a foot in Nagaland”. The ‘Z’ security blanket is comprised of a layer of heavily-armed Nagaland police and military personnel.

‘Brig’ Phunthing Shimrang, Chairman of Ceasefire Monitoring Cell, informed The Morung Express that no specific circuit for interactions at any form or level has been chalked out, since the Chairman arrived only today. However, consultative meetings and interactions would be held soon, he said.
