“The constant lack of trust in Naga society has led towards a defeated mentality among its people,” stated Kuolachalie Seyie, Businessman and Social worker while speaking at the monthly talks of Angami Students’ Union (ASU) and Pathfinders.

The 9th Phase of the ‘Morung: Heart of Listening and Back to one’s roots’ was held on April 30 at the ASU headquarters with Seyie speaking on ‘Business and its potentialities in Nagaland’.

While many young Nagas today complain about the lack of capital to start business, Seyie viewed that one’s health, intellect, talent, skills and time are one’s capital.

“Your health is your capital. Your talent is your capital. Your intellect, your time is your capital,” asserted Seyie, further exhorting the participants that the first step is to examine and search one’s life and identify the talents and skills.

The second responsibility is integrity where the Speaker pointed out that honesty in small matters is very important. Also referring to the Bible, Seyie affirmed that being honest in small matters will lead to responsibilities and opportunities in big things.

Kuolachali Seyie who is the proprietor of the Seyie Gas Service in Kohima narrated his story in becoming a successful entrepreneur, which he credits it to his integrity, accountability and transparency in the smallest of responsibilities.   Emphasizing on the importance of wealth creation which is essential in providing services, commodities and employment to the society, Seyie noted that wealth is not the same as income. “Wealth is what you accumulate and not what you spent. Your savings are your wealth,” said Seyie who further criticized the Naga people who spend more than they earn or save. We have so many opportunities to earn yet, we are not willing to come out of our comfort zone.

With the free trade zones that have emerged and the strategic location of the State, Seyie noted that trading foreign goods from Thailand, South Korea and China is a major opportunity for Nagas where budding entrepreneurs can work as transporters, wholesalers, distributors and retailers etc.  However for any business to flourish, one needs consistency, commitment, interest and honesty.

“We don’t put our intellect and interest in the opportunities that are available in our land. We have become leeches to Delhi and the State government. There is lack of discipline in our studies, food habits and work,” said Seyie while asserting that the self respect, dignity, honesty and mutual understanding of the Nagas are slowly disappearing.

This has led to a distrustful and defeating mentality where people no longer has the positive trust and hope of change and progress in Naga society. The ‘can do’ and ‘can overcome’ mentality can only appear when integrity is brought in. “We have to decide to bring in integrity. Decide that it starts with you. Then inspiring stories will emerge. Decide that we will not be a party to dishonesty, fictitious bills and fictitious projects and corruption,” said Seyie.

The deteriorating culture of the young generation who has failed to work with hard work and only confine their lives to comfort and enjoyment was further discussed Let us nurture honesty in our children, appealed Seyie who pressed upon the need to build the self respect of the Nagas again by instilling honesty, purity, love and unselfishness among the young generation and fulfill ‘the purpose of our Creator.’

“The only solution is to come back to the truth, to be honest and truthful in small matters. The value of success is lost when you do not work hard. Success cannot be achieved with comfort and ease. Short-cuts leads to destruction,” concluded Seyie.
