Wanglem Konyak received the Congress party ticket today for the upcoming bye-election to the 43rd Tapi Assembly Constituency, scheduled for November 7 and exuded confidence that the party would emerge victorious with the support of the people.
The President of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved Wanglem's candidature as the Congress candidate for the ensuing bye-election and the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) handed over the party ticket to him by organising a ticket distribution ceremony at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, NPCC President S Supongmeren Jamir congratulated Wanglem for getting the party ticket and emphasised the party's commitment to advocating for the Nagas.
He described the Congress party as a strong affiliation to the grassroots people.
Jamir also expressed confidence that with the support of the people, the Congress party would emerge victorious in the bye-election.
He also advised Wanglem to prioritise building a strong connection with the grassroots people, as it aligns with the party's principle of fighting for the people's sentiments.
Further, Jamir sought the support and cooperation of the villages within the Tapi constituency for Wanglem.
Meanwhile, Wanglem expressed gratitude to the central leadership and NPCC for their trust in him. He affirmed his commitment to the principles and objectives of the Congress party and promised to do his best in developing his constituency and the state.
He also appealed for the moral and prayer support of the Nagas.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by NPCC Working President Khriedi Theunuo.
Wanglem contested as a Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate from the Tapi constituency during the election to the 14th Nagaland Assembly elections held on on February 27 this year but eventually lost to Late Noke Wangnao of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
The bye-election was necessitated to fill the vacancy left by the death of Wangnao on August 28.
The NDPP, on October 17, also announced the candidature of Wangpang Konyak for the upcoming bye-election. The NPF is yet to declare its candidate.
